PennLive:James Wolpert releases new single 'Bats'

By : Fabio
James Wolpert

The former "The Voice" contestant and Strasburg resident is still working on his first album, "The Entire City,"  which was funded by Kickstarter in June. But now, fans have something to tide them over until its release - his first single, "Bats."
"It's a very self-deprecating song," Wolpert told PennLive. "It's about personal missteps that I've made to push people in my life away. It's just a little facet of the whole album, which is essentially a self portrait."
"[Wolpert] is a mad scientist," said Russell Wolff, the producer for "Bats." "He goes into this world of his own devising. He creates these worlds, these musical worlds, and they're related to other worlds that have been out there before, but it's his own thing."

"He creates like a mad scientist and then he comes out with these creations and we all sit around and are like 'Wow, we need this in the world.'"

"Bats" is especially significant to Wolff - it is the first song he ever heard Wolpert perform.
"I never saw him on 'The Voice,' so I saw him onstage with an acoustic guitar playing 'Bats,'" Wolff recalled. "For me, it was like this is a huge song with this huge story."

"It's a musical experience that brings you to places," Wolff said later. "As you listen to it you feel anxiety, you feel your heart beating faster, you feel actual physical symptoms. It gives you chills."
One thing that makes "Bats," and Wolpert's entire album, unique is the fact that the vocals have not been adjusted for pitch.

"It's so rare these days, but the vocals you hear are the scratch recordings of the take we ended up going with in the studio," Wolff said. "Nothing's been done, there's no pitch correction. He didn't come back and re-record these vocals."

"If you were in the studio now and we solo-ed just the vocal track, you'll hear all this crap in the background -- you'll hear somebody coughing. You don't hear it within the context of the song, but soloed, you hear it," Wolff continued.

"That's just a testament to what a rare talent and brilliant artist [Wolpert] is."
While the single is being released on Halloween, it won't make for the perfect Halloween party dance record. "It could set some Halloween-y ambience though," Wolpert said. "It's a very gritty, rough and screaming sort of song."

"It's meant to be listened to loud, wherever you can fit that into your life," Wolpert said

PopWrapped: James Wolpert Releases Debut Single, Talks New Album, And Life Post-‘The Voice’

By : Fabio
James Wolpert

The Entire City is the name of the 12-track album that James has just finished. Why that name? “It’s based off a painting by Max Ernst that I really love, and it kind of struck a chord with me when I first saw it. It’s about being wayward and placeless. It’s the region of the entire city from plains to bridges. It’s very personal to me.” He also says that the album will be straight-up Rock, but you will find some Blues and Folk influences in there too. Fans will also be very happy to know that a release date is coming soon!

The first single off of The Entire City is called “Bats.” It was released on Halloween, and it’s everything that James has promised. With killer vocals and guitar riffs for days, it’s a throwback to how rock music should sound. Just raw, uncut vocals and passion for one’s craft. I asked James what the recording process was like for “Bats.” He said it was “very cool, and very simple. We had four guys in the room: bass, drums, guitar, and me (also on guitar). Everything you hear, apart from over-dubs, is 100% live. If you listen to the scratch track, you can hear people walking around in the background and other instruments bleeding over into the mic. There’s no manipulation in those performances. It was very raw and organic.” Be sure to check out “Bats” and even download it on iTunes for only $0.99!

When James isn’t creating music, you will probably find him hiking, doing design work and illustrations, rocking out to “No Quarter” by Led Zeppelin, and sharing very entertaining photos/videos on his Instagram. Make sure to add him on all his social media accounts below!

LancasterOnline interview Margie Wolpert

By : Fabio

James,Margie and Rachael

LancasterOnline interviewed Margie Wolpert, mother of James Wolpert and Julie Groff, mother of actor-singer Jonathan Groff.

Read:Full interview

Margie Wolpert says the thought of performing on stage is nightmare-inducing for her. She didn't seek fame for James; she says she couldn't even imagine it.

"James is doing this because he loves it. He's absolutely in love with music."

She played the clarinet when she was younger, but says James inherited his musical talent from his paternal grandfather, George Wolpert, who sang with an orchestra. (As the story goes, the elder Wolpert lost out on a spot on "The Amateur Hour" radio program to young Frank Sinatra and his band from Hoboken, N.J.)
(...)
It took James Wolpert some time to figure out what his passion was, his mother says.

He'd played the drums as a youngster; he sang in the school chorus; he even tried out for basketball at one point. But he was "kind of flailing," Margie Wolpert says, until he started to play the guitar in high school.

It quickly became clear that he had a gift for playing the guitar. He joined a band started by some friends at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, and won roles in school productions. He played the lead character, Troy Bolton, in EPAC's production of "High School Musical," and, in 2008, placed fifth in an ABC reality show, "High School Musical: Get in the Picture."

As James made his way through one round after another on "The Voice," it became increasingly nerve-wracking, his mother says.

The full weight of what he was doing hit her just before the show's "blind audition," when James was to be introduced to the NBC audience. "This is the first time that America - America, not 2,000 people - is going to see your artist, your son," Margie Wolpert says. "I thought, 'Holy cow, I hope they like him as much as we like him. … I know how nice, how special, he is. Will they see that?' "

He had left Carnegie Mellon University to devote himself to music, and he'd quit his job at an Apple Store in Pittsburgh to compete on "The Voice." "He put it all on the line," his mother says.

It's not easy to let a child do this, she says. But "you see that they're passionate about it. You want them to be happy."

James Wolpert says he knows his mom wasn't thrilled that he dropped out of college, but "miraculously, she was always there to support me even if I was being stubborn. She's been to California and back so many times in the past few weeks that it would make your head spin. She's undergone late nights, early mornings, countless interviews and, of course, my embarrassingly lacking communication skills - and she's proud of me … despite it all."

In an email, he notes, "I'm humbled by how far she's willing to go for me to help me achieve my dreams. She's a worrier, but I'm certainly glad she is."

James singing Jolene (Cover of Ray Lamontagne)

By : Fabio

"This is for Na-- for all the times we had to count change to buy bread and for all of the wonderful music we shared because of it." James Wolpert
Lyrics:

Jolene

Cocaine flame in my bloodstream
Sold my coat when I hit Spokane
Bought myself a hard pack of cigarettes in the early morning
rain
Lately my hands they don't feel like mine
My eyes been stung with dust, I'm blind
Held you in my arms one time
Lost you just the same
Jolene
I ain't about to go straight
It's too late
I found myself face down in the ditch
Booze on my hair
Blood on my lips
A picture of you, holding a picture of me
in the pocket of my blue jeans
Still don't know what love means
Still don't know what love means
Jolene
Ah, La, La, La, La, La
Jolene
Been so long since I seen your face
or felt a part of this human race
I've been living out of this here suitcase for way too long
A man needs something he can hold onto
A nine pound hammer or a woman like you
Either one of them things will do
Jolene
I ain't about to go straight
It's too late
I found myself face down in the ditch
Booze in my hair
Blood on my lips
A picture of you, holding a picture of me
In the pocket of my blue jeans
Still don't know what love means
Still don't know what love means
Jolene
La, La, La, La, La, La, La
Jolene
La, La, La, La, La, La, La
Jolene

Interview with LancasterOnline plus the working title is “The Entire City”

By : Fabio

James reached his goal on Kickstarter,so Lancaster Online decided to interview James Wolpert about his life after The Voice and his new record. You may read the best parts of the article here on WolpertBR or the full article on Lancaster Online page:HERE

Life after ‘The Voice’:

He says the following he attracted on “The Voice” — 75,000 Twitter followers, 22,000 Instagram followers — was “kind of acquired essentially overnight.”
He says he wants his record “to have its own life, apart from ‘The Voice.’”
“I’m trying to treat this project as if I am building from the ground up,” he says. “I’m not afraid of being broke and kind of starting over. I think that’s a very lucky bravery to have.”

The record:

Wolpert says his record is “going to be outrageously unique. I am very proud of it.”It was originally going to be a Daphne Kay record — Daphne Kay is the band Wolpert formed with his college friend Cory Juba. It’s now a James Wolpert record. Its working title is “The Entire City” the title also of one of its tracks. It’s a reference to one of Wolpert’s favorite Max Ernst paintings.Wolff says “we’re all just totally in love” with the song. Wolpert says he just wrote it recently. It’s a “stream of consciousness, full of flashbacks and nostalgia,” Wolpert says.“It’s about being paralyzed, kind of, by crushing pressures and the release of being able to kind of just run away from it all.”It shouldn’t be construed as a reflection on his time on “The Voice,” he says.Rather, it refers to “all kinds of other pressures, and how easy it is to run from them — and the consequences thereof.”He says some of the songs on the record “I’ve been kind of working out over the past few years ... Others are coming rapid-fire.”

Mission statement:

“It’s really chiaroscuro,” he says — a mix of lilting ballads, sweet melodies, and “hard-rocking goodness. It will punch you right in the gut sometimes.”He says there will be “no post-processing,” no post-recording pitch correction, nothing that will “change what went into the mike in any drastic fashion.”“The idea is to restore the integrity of performance, which has kind of been lost in music,” he says, adding, “You know what they say about too much of a good thing. ... Overproducing can be used to compensate for a lack of musicality.”He says he thinks the record will “play well live.” “I have really high hopes for it. I love performing live; that’s my favorite thing to do.”
